Contra Costa Passes Local Food Resolution
County level support of local food and Local Food Month

Contra Costa County has declared June, "Buy Fresh Buy Local Food Month'," due to the great work on behalf of our partners at BALT. In addition to these efforts, the county passed a resloution linking the Public Health Department with local agricutural organizations in an effort to increase access to fresh, locally produced foods.

Warehouse Chains Ration Rice Sales
Are Costco and Sam's Club fueling food panic?

As you may have already heard, the USA's two biggest warehouse chains have started limiting the number of bags of rice each customer may buy in their stores. The rationing seems to apply to imported rice. Neither retailer commented on whether these measures were taken in response to supply shortages or customers stocking up in anticipation of higher prices. Rice stocks within the USA are steady, according to the USA Rice Federation.

Is President Bush a Closet Locavore?
President delivers unlikely endorsement of local food.

In his April 29 press conference, President Bush hinted at a policy that sounds suspiciously like localism.

"One thing I think that would be -- I know would be very creative policy is if we -- is if we would buy food from local farmers as a way to help deal with scarcity, but also as a way to put in place an infrastructure so that nations can be self-sustaining and self-supporting."
